Curiosities about Venice - Secrets and legends of the Serenissima

Why are the gondolas black?

Gondolas, the symbol of Venice, are all black due to a law dating back to the 17th century. They used to be decorated with bright colors and precious materials, but to avoid competition among noble families, it was decided to standardize them with an elegant black color.

Venice has more than 400 bridges and no roads

The city is built on 118 islands connected by more than 400 bridges and more than 170 canals. There are no roads or cars here-the only way to get around is on foot or by boat.

The mystery of the Bridge of Sighs

Contrary to popular belief, the Bridge of Sighs has nothing romantic about it! The name comes from the sighs of the prisoners who, crossing it, would take one last look at the lagoon before being locked up in the dark prisons of the Piombi.

The clock in St. Mark's Square has a secret
The Moors' Clock, located above the Clock Tower in St. Mark's Square, not only tells the time, but also the phases of the moon and the zodiac. In addition, two bronze statues-the "Moors"-have been striking the hours on a bell since 1499.

The ghost of Ca' Dario
One of the most eerie palaces in Venice is Ca' Dario, located on the Grand Canal. It is said to bring bad luck to its owners, as many of them have had tragic fates. Legend considers it one of the most "cursed" buildings in the city.
